Australian IBF heavyweight titleholder Jay Opetay (25-0, 19 KOs) has expressed his desire to fight WBC, IBO, WBA and WBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs).
“With all due respect, I would love to meet Usyk in the ring. When he fought in London at the Olympic Games, he took the gold medal in my division.”
“I was always close to the top. I've always been in the shadows and waiting for my opportunities. I would love to fight a fighter like that. I have the style to beat him.”
Opetaya will fight his next fight on October 12 against Jack Massey on the undercard of the fight between Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev.
In his last fight on the night of May 18-19 (which took place on the undercard of the fight between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury), Jay Opetay defeated Mairis Briedis by unanimous decision.
The same night, Usyk inflicted Fury's first defeat in his professional career in a fight that took place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The victory was awarded to the Ukrainian by split decision: 115-112, 113-114 and 114-113.
Usyk and Fury signed an agreement for a second fight. The Gypsy King has officially activated the revenge option. The second fight between Oleksandr and Tyson will take place on December 21, 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said he would seek the introduction of video replays in this fight. Oleksandr Usyk will be preparing for the rematch at the training camp in Valencia.
